Why do prisons fail to rehabilitate?

PRISONS CANNOT PREVENT CRIME, DETER AND REHABILITATE BECAUSE COMPLEX, CONFLICTING AND UNREALISTIC DEMANDS ARE MADE ON THEM. A SINGLE OBJECTIVE IS NEEDED, THE PROTECTION OF SOCIETY FROM DANGER.

A former director general of the Prison Service has said that rehabilitation of offenders in prison does not work and should be eliminated. By allowing prisoners to live alone while they are still ill-equipped to live independently, the incarceration system pushes them toward failure and recidivism.
